Demolition starts at blaze school

The school's roof collapsed in the blaze which broke out at lunchtime
Demolition work has begun at a south Wales valleys primary school which was gutted by fire.
Pupils were evacuated from Coedpenmaen County Primary in Trallwn, Pontypridd, when the blaze broke out on Monday lunchtime.

The school's roof collapsed in the blaze. South Wales Fire Service is now calling for sprinklers to be fitted in all new and refurbished schools.

Pupils have been told they will not be able to return to classes this week.

Rhondda Cynon Taf (RCT) Council said lessons would begin at Graig-y-Wion Primary School next week.

The building was safely evacuated of all staff and pupils as the blaze developed, and parents were called to the school to collect their children.

The local authority has said that the cost of the damage had yet to be assessed but an investigation into the cause of the fire was continuing.

Councillor Mike Forey, RCT's cabinet member for education, said the alternative arrangements at Graig-y-Wion school, on Albert Road, had been put in place in order to minimise the disruption for Coedpenmaen's 282 pupils.

He said: "This is likely to involve a 'staggered' intake, with junior pupils returning first and infant pupils returning shortly afterwards."

Mr Forey said they could not confirm on which days these intakes were likely to take place.

But he said council staff were making adjustments at Graig-y-Wion to make it suitable for staff and pupils from Coedpenmaen.
